Focusing its tests, historically, on vehicles that are for family use, the Insurance Institute usually tests four-door models. Given the recent improvements in safety of two-door models, the IIHS decided to add a handful of two-doors to its testing. And, surprise, it was a Volvo that led the way.

The Volvo C30, which comes featured only as a two-door model, ranked higher than others tested, including the Chevrolet Cobalt and Honda Civic. The cars underwent frontal, side-impact and rear-impact crash tests. The rating system the institute used to rate the models ranges from good to acceptable to marginal and finally to poor.

The C30 earned “good” ratings on all three tests and qualified as one of IIHS’s Top Safety Picks. In order to achieve that classification, a vehicle is required to earn ratings of good in all three tests and must either have electronic stability control as standard equipment or offer it as an option. The Volvo C30 was rated good in the demanding side-crash test, which simulates a car being struck by an S.U.V. or pickup truck.
